Relative Strength Explained: How to Find Market Leaders Without Chasing Hype

Some stocks rise faster than the market. Others lag even when the index is strong.

Relative strength helps identify that difference.

It asks:

Is this stock outperforming or underperforming its benchmark?

That can help investors spot market leadership.

But strong relative performance does not automatically mean a stock is safe to chase.

Relative strength compares the performance of one asset against another.

Technology sector vs broader market

If a stock rises 15% while the S&P 500 rises 5%, the stock has shown stronger relative performance.

If the stock rises only 2%, it has lagged.

The key idea is:

Relative strength measures performance versus a benchmark—not whether the asset itself is expensive or cheap.

Relative Strength Is Not RSI

This is an important distinction.

Relative Strength
Compares one asset’s performance with another asset or benchmark.

Relative Strength Index (RSI)
Measures the speed and magnitude of recent price changes within one asset.

They are different concepts.

A stock can show strong relative strength against the market while its RSI is high.

That does not mean one indicator is wrong.

Stock A falls 2%.
