Novo Nordisk After Wegovy: Can Five New Blockbusters Restart the Growth Story?

Novo Nordisk stock is entering an important transition.

Wegovy and Ozempic turned Novo into one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies.

What comes after semaglutide?

Novo says it aims to launch more than five major blockbuster medicines by 2030 and generate over 150 billion Danish kroner of pipeline sales by 2035.

Why Novo Needs New Growth

Wegovy still has enormous demand.

But Novo faces three major pressures:

  • stronger competition from Eli Lilly
  • lower drug prices
  • eventual semaglutide patent expirations

Eli Lilly’s Zepbound has gained market share quickly, while Novo investors are increasingly questioning whether obesity drugs alone can support long-term growth.

That means Novo needs a broader pipeline.

What Comes After Wegovy?

Novo is developing several next-generation medicines.

One of the most important is CagriSema, a combination obesity treatment designed to produce greater weight loss than existing therapies.

Another is zenagamtide, alongside several oral obesity treatments.

Novo also plans to have at least five Phase 3 programs in obesity and diabetes and another five in other therapeutic areas by 2030.

The company is therefore trying to move from:

one dominant franchise

to

multiple large growth products.

Weight-Loss Pills Could Be Huge

Novo’s CEO believes pills could eventually represent around 50% of the obesity-drug market by 2030.

That matters because pills are easier to distribute and may appeal to patients who dislike injections.

Novo already has oral Wegovy in the U.S. and is developing several additional pills.

If oral treatments expand the overall obesity market, Novo could reach millions of new patients.

But Competition Is Getting Harder

Novo is no longer competing only with Eli Lilly.

Roche, Pfizer, Amgen, AstraZeneca and several biotech companies are also developing weight-loss medicines.

More competition can mean:

lower prices + higher marketing costs + less market share

So even if the obesity market reaches $100 billion or more, Novo may capture a smaller percentage of it.

Why Investors Are Still Cautious

Novo shares fell sharply during its latest Capital Markets Day despite the company’s long-term targets.

Investors questioned pricing, M&A strategy and whether the pipeline can replace future semaglutide sales.

That highlights an important difference:

a promising pipeline is not the same as proven revenue.

Drug trials can fail.

Approvals can be delayed.

Competitors can launch better products.

What Should Investors Watch?

Watch Wegovy sales, CagriSema results, oral obesity drugs, Eli Lilly competition and new pipeline launches.

The central question is:

Can Novo turn today’s obesity leadership into several new blockbuster franchises before Wegovy’s growth slows?

If it succeeds, Novo could restart a broader growth story.

If not, investors may continue questioning how much of today’s valuation depends on one extraordinarily successful drug family.
