LatinAmerican Currencies After the Fed Hike: Can the Peso, Real and Argentine Peso Hold Up Against the Dollar?

Latin American currencies held up surprisingly well after the Federal Reserve raised U.S. interest rates again.

The Mexican peso, Brazilian real and Argentine peso all strengthened modestly in the next trading session as U.S. Treasury yields retreated and global risk appetite improved.

But the bigger challenge remains:

high U.S. rates → attractive dollar assets → pressure on emerging-market currencies

Why Does the Fed Matter to Latin America?

Global investors compare yields across countries.

When U.S. Treasury yields rise, investors can earn attractive returns from relatively safe dollar assets.

That can pull capital away from emerging markets.

The basic relationship is:

higher U.S. yields → stronger dollar → more pressure on LATAM currencies

That is why Federal Reserve decisions can quickly affect currencies thousands of miles from the United States.

Why Did LATAM Currencies Rise Anyway?

The Fed hike itself was expected.

After the decision, U.S. Treasury yields retreated and the dollar gave back some of its initial gains.

That helped emerging markets.

On September 17:

  • the Brazilian real gained about 0.3%
  • the Mexican peso gained about 0.4%
  • the Argentine peso edged about 0.3% higher

Regional stocks also rose around 0.6%.

So the immediate reaction was more resilient than the Fed’s hawkish tone might suggest.

Why the Brazilian Real Can Stay Attractive

Brazil still offers extremely high interest rates.

Its central bank recently cut the Selic again to 13.75%, but Brazilian yields remain far above U.S. rates.

That gives investors a large interest-rate advantage for holding Brazilian assets.

This can support the real through the carry trade:

borrow in a lower-yield currency → invest in a higher-yield currency

The danger is that Brazil is cutting rates while the Fed is raising them.

If that gap narrows too quickly, some of the real’s yield advantage disappears.

What About the Mexican Peso?

The Mexican peso also benefits from relatively high domestic rates and deep financial markets.

Mexico has another important factor: its close economic connection with the United States.

Positive progress in U.S.–Mexico trade negotiations recently helped the peso gain even as the dollar remained strong.

A Reuters poll earlier this year expected the peso to remain broadly range-bound into 2027, although trade and U.S. monetary policy remain major risks.

Argentina Is Different

The Argentine peso is harder to compare directly with the real or Mexican peso.

Its value is much more influenced by domestic inflation, currency policy, capital flows and economic reforms.

Argentina’s economy grew 2.0% year over year in Q2, which has improved the macro story, but inflation and currency stability remain critical.

So even if the dollar weakens globally, Argentina still needs domestic stability for the peso to strengthen sustainably.

The Dollar Is Still the Main Risk

The biggest challenge for the region is that U.S. interest rates remain high.

The Fed has also signaled that more tightening may be possible.

If Treasury yields rise again, global investors may prefer dollar assets.

That could create:

capital outflows → weaker LATAM currencies → more imported inflation

A weaker currency makes imported fuel, machinery and other goods more expensive.

That can make it harder for Latin American central banks to keep cutting their own rates.

Commodities Could Provide Support

Latin America also benefits when commodity prices are strong.

Brazil exports oil, iron ore and agricultural products.

Chile and Peru are major copper producers.

Higher commodity export revenues bring more dollars into regional economies and can support local currencies.

That means LATAM FX is often caught between two forces:

high U.S. rates hurting currencies

versus

strong commodity prices supporting them

What Should Investors Watch?

Watch U.S. Treasury yields, the dollar index, local central-bank rates, commodity prices and inflation.

The key question is:

Can Latin American countries keep offering attractive yields while the Fed keeps U.S. rates high?

If Treasury yields stabilize, currencies such as the real and Mexican peso may remain resilient.

If U.S. yields climb sharply again, pressure on Latin American currencies could quickly return.
